Spring 2026 Newsletter
State of the Park - The winter weather at the Park has been mild this season compared to the last few years, and warmer weather has arrived early. Wind and snow damage to facilities, as well as fallen trees throughout the Park, have been minimal. Trails and wooden bridges did not sustain the typical wear and tear from the harsh environmental conditions experienced in recent years. Volunteer work parties and Rangers have helped repair minor infrastructure damage for the upcoming visitor season.
Ranger presence - We are especially excited to report that BC Parks, with assistance from the Society, has committed to staffing the Ranger position full-time, seven days per week during the visitor season from May 1 through September 30. This represents a major improvement in the protection of the area, the safety of visitors, and ensures an official presence during the busiest time of the year. It is a significant step forward, as the Park has not had full-time Ranger coverage since 1994.
Main dock pier and ramp replacement - A significant project is underway for the replacement of the main dock, pier, and ramp facilities. These structures had reached the end of their useful life and require replacement. Access to land from the dock is restricted while repairs are underway, from May 25 through June 4, 2026. The dock itself may still be used during this period, however, access to the Park from the dock may be restricted.
Additional improvements made - Several buoys near Chatterbox Falls that submerged during high tides have now been adjusted or replaced. Last spring, the Society also helped support the complete replacement of the Macdonald Island dock and buoy facilities. This spring other improvements have been made to the buoys and railings.
Planned improvements - We are funding additional improvements for 2026, including four new tent pads, two at Chatterbox Falls and two at Macdonald Island. Also, we plan to install two trail counters to help provide more accurate information regarding trail usage throughout the Park. Educational and storytelling signage is also being developed at the Macdonald pavilion. In addition, we are continuing to work with BC Parks to identify the best long-term solution for replacing the aging pit toilets at Chatterbox Falls. Finally, the main dock replacement is being considered.
WIFI access for donations - At the Park, donations can now be made online through the BC Parks installed Starlink WiFi access point located at the dock by using the QR codes displayed on the buoys and dock signage. Simply connect to the Park’s Starlink signal, point your phone camera at the QR code, and you will be directed to the donation page. The WiFi signal is intended for donation purposes only and is only active when a Ranger is in residence. Donations may still be made by cash or cheque at the dock kiosk. Alternatively, visitors may choose to donate once they regain cellular service.
Governance – We welcomed 3 new Society board members at the AGM in March; Pam Lowry, Marc Owen-Flood and Ed Life, and look forward to their contributions. They are passionate about Mac’s vision of preserving and protecting the Park. If you have experience (legal, finance, technical, maritime, marketing), passion for the Inlet, and interest in serving on the Society Board, please email at: [email protected].
Please donate - Your donations online at https://www.princesslouisa.bc.ca/donate and at the Park make the Ranger presence possible. Donations help ensure ongoing repairs to infrastructure, maintenance, and improvements can be made. Your financial assistance is essential in ensuring that Swíwelát, Princess Louisa Marine Park remains one of the finest examples of a co-managed park within the BC Parks system.
The Park continues to provide a majestic experience for visitors from around the world, offering a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience. We hope to see you at the inlet this season, whether you arrive by private vessel, seaplane, or through one of the commercial transport operators serving the area.
The Society’s mission, in accordance with “Mac” Macdonald’s wishes, is to preserve and protect the Park for all mankind, forever. Thank you for your continued support.
Tom Captain, President
Princess Louisa International Society
